Understanding The Halo Effect: Why Beauty Gets the Job

Although human resource is probably one of the most dynamic areas in behavioural science, some hiring trends have essentially remained the same despite the revolutionary changes implemented in recent times. Attractiveness is particularly an interesting subject, especially in the field of employment. Apparently, interviewees who are physically pleasing tend to be more favoured than those who do not make any effort to appear so. Certain practices have also clearly shown a significant bias against average-looking applicants on the aspect of rank and job packages offered.

According to psychologists, attractive people are often assumed to possess greater intelligence and several positive social traits. Otherwise known as the halo effect, it has somehow affected the result of job interviews. Although this finding does not rule out the fact that there are also a few downsides to being beautiful, such as the discrimination of women in jobs where hiring men is more preferable to the employer, many people still work hard to look more attractive to increase their chances of getting the best jobs, which also explains why unsecured cosmetic surgery loans have become increasingly available these days.
